AACC Present: Australia at Expo 2020 Dubai

  • Australia Africa Chamber of Commerce Level 5, 121 Exhibition St, MELBOURNE Australia (map)

Members of the AACC had the pleasure of getting first-hand insights into Australia’s participation in the upcoming Expo 2020 Dubai, through a webinar led in partnership with Austrade. The webinar was led by key experts in the Expo 2020 operation - we heard from Justin Mcgowan, Australia’s Commissioner-General of Expo 2020; Clare Cooney, the Australian Pavilion Programming Manager; Mounir Sankary, Austrade’s Trade Commissioner for Expo 2020; and Kassem Younes, Global Victoria’s General Manager based in Dubai.

The speakers offered invaluable insights into Australia’s pavilion at the event, which will be constructed around the theme of Blue Sky Dreaming. This theme, as the experts unveiled, will encapsulate the optimism embedded within the global economy, and Australia’s key role in rebuilding robust inventive trade relationships post-COVID-19.

The Blue Sky Dreaming pavilion will play a crucial role in platforming Australia as a desired partner for tourism, education and investment. To mobilise this, the Expo team have coordinated events around the variety of theme weeks, which focus on specific sectors. The Health and Wellness theme week, for example, occurs simultaneously as Arab Health Week.

The Australian Expo 2020 team have shown remarkable adaptation, and have used the challenges posed by COVID-19 on global business patterns as opportunities. From showcasing trade diversification in the context of economic recovery to facilitating hybrid delivery of events, the Australian Blue Sky Dreaming Pavilion makes the most of newfound business opportunities.

At the AACC, we are particularly excited by the chance to engage in collective discussion with African countries about building trade relationships. As the Emirati government has focused on ensuring that smaller African countries can be showcased individually, and not part of a collective, the Expo 2020 will serve as a rare opportunity for Australian businesses to join the global discussion.
