This event is a gala dinner in Melbourne, hosted by the Australia Africa Chamber of Commerce, with every dollar of net proceeds going to the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation.
The Australia Africa Chamber of Commerce is hosting a gala dinner in Melbourne in honour of Eliud Kipchoge, during his visit for the Melbourne Marathon. It is a small evening by design. Eleven tables, a single interview on stage, and a room built for the kind of conversation that does not happen at a conference.
Every dollar of net proceeds goes to the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation, which builds libraries, sponsors school fees and plants trees across Kenya. The Chamber takes nothing from the evening.
The Guest of Honour
Eliud Kipchoge is one of the greatest long-distance runners in the world. He has broken the marathon world record twice, won gold at the Olympic Games and the World Championships, and became the first human in history to run a sub-two-hour marathon, recording 1:59:40 in Vienna as part of the INEOS 1:59 Challenge.
He grew up on a farm in Nandi District, Kenya, cycling to market with his family’s milk and running three kilometres to school and back each day. He trains under Patrick Sang at the Global Sports Training Camp in Kaptagat. When he is not training he reads. He will be interviewed on stage and will take questions from the floor.
Eliud Kipchoge: “I don’t run with my legs; I run with my heart and my mind.”
The Foundation
The Eliud Kipchoge Foundation works on two pillars, education and the environment. Its mission, in Kipchoge’s words, is to give all children in the world access to knowledge and education, and to see them grow up in a green and breathing world.
On education, the Foundation sponsors school fees, builds libraries, and works to convince people of the importance of education and the power of books. Kipchoge credits his own early access to books with teaching him to value life.
On the environment, it plants trees, helps keep and grow forests, and supports sustainable use of farmland so that land stays productive for the next generation. As he puts it, without forests you cannot breathe.
That connection is the story of the evening. A man who ran to school and read his way out of a farm is now building libraries, and the room is paying for them.
Dress Code
The Athenaeum Club requires refined business attire: a suit, or a tailored jacket with tailored trousers and a collared shirt. Ties are preferred but optional. Denim, sports attire, distressed clothing and sports shoes are not permitted anywhere in the Club.
The Chamber
The Australia Africa Chamber of Commerce supports the development of trade and investment relationships between Australian business and the African continent. It is hosting this dinner and retains no part of the net proceeds.
